Critics generally applauded it — the movie currently has a generally positive 73 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. A crowded summer release can always take part of the blame.

Legend of the Sword. Chestburster is just never going to be for everyone. Not to mention one is family-friendly sci-fi fantasy, and the other, gruesome, R-rated sci-fi horror. But in a film industry full of franchises, a benchmark exists for a reason. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Twitter account. We have a year old literary tradition with a billion or so licensable properties featuring every story that could ever be told and most of them far more bankable than this drivel. We have the richest supply of intellectual property in all of recorded history. Go to a library and throw a stone.

The truth is that Hollywood is trying to dumb us all down and always goes lower brow, never higher. Besides they hate Western civilisation and Christendom and would never draw on any of our books or dramatic traditions when they can just rehash the same old stale crap that worked 20 years ago. They also have a rigid political regime and can only choose very limited ranges of material that fit their hardcore bolshevist political propaganda.

By the way, H. Giger designed furniture and interiors in his life. Enough Ridley, not all humans are fucking idiots. This neverending 21st century propaganda of political agendas is the worst thing Hollywood could get into and it will definetely RUIN IT! You have a 2 hours long movie and 20 minutes take only scenes where Fassbender fassbenders Fassbender.

I was expecting a much much better and entertaining movie. What went wrong here is quite simple: Aliens has a large and dedicated fan base, especially for the first two films. Alien was a suspense filled horror fest. Aliens was an action packed sci-fi war with monsters.

Then came Prometheus with the maestro at the helm, and we thought the franchise was saved. Instead, we get monsters with a heavy dose of existentialist garbage. Fans said as much and were ecstatic when an Aliens 5 was suggested.

Covenant was a little more monster but still the philosophical mess as the first one. Chickens come to roost right at the steps of Fox Studios.

Actually the problem with the film IS the fact that he listened to the fans. Fans want a Xenomorph. He has completely butchered the franchise. How can David be the Xenomorph creator, when, a: The crystal clear Xenomorph mural in Prometheus, and B: The 10, year old fossilized Engineer in the first Alien movie, that obviously died by a chest burster via a face hugger. Yet Covenant is set 10 years after Prometheus and just before Alien.

Way after the Engineer was fossilized. Just two of countless examples. If it was a little more linear I could forgive a little.

Neither will atrociously-written scripts appeal to thinking science fiction fans. Covenant is both pretentious and distasteful, with limp characters and lifeless, dull plotting. Uninspired, you might say.

Covenant has opened bigger internally than any of the previous Alien movies. It will end up being the biggest Alien movie in the franchise. Stars Wars is for Children. Aliens is for Adults.

Go give Ridley 12 bucks so he can make more Alien Movies, fuck what this clown at Variety is talking about. Regardless of what you think of the third installment, it concluded the trilogy. And, like Star Wars, the Alien trilogy was very successful although not quite so wildly successful like Star Wars. Think about it for a second.

Covenant was easily just as bad. Funnily enough I enjoyed the first 45 minute build-up to the moment where they land on the planet. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Stanley. But then the wheels fall off. The tone becomes alternately lead-footed, spelled out, tensionless, or boring as batshit. The aliens are bloodless visual effects, and are about as badarse as a Toyota Prius. Lastly, the CGI deployed from the moment these inept knuckleheads land on the planet is unbelievably lazy and atrocious.

It is painfully, woefully obvious, and it ruined the whole experience for me after it had already been ruined just moments before, and a few moments before that. Now I know for a fact that some of the monsters in both Prometheus and Covenant were rendered in both practical prosthetic costumes and animatronics. But as soon as you dump them in front of a stupid green screen……. Well speaking as a huge fan of the Alien franchise, and one that really loved, Prometheus, despite its problems…I expected a direct follow-up to Prometheus with David and Elizabeth on a quest for the Engineers and their plans for humanity.

So I decided not see Covenant. Yeah, that makes perfect sense. What was the point you keep trying to make? Every movie has to make as much money as the highest grossing movie? In his directorial dotage, he revised and changed an amazing and remarkable SF movie that he had done as lean and hungry younger man… and control the Alien mythos as HE sees it in the newer films. I hate both movie franchises. I found Star Wars to be silly scifi even though science fiction is my favorite genre.

Alien on the other hand can loosely be called Scifi because it has aliens but it is more horror stories. The only liked two of them and one was Prometheus and the other was the one where they fought the with Predators underground.

This is why I also thought Arrival was awful but mostly boring. I consider them nothing more than run and chase movies. The Alien movie cannot be watched by everyone in the same manner as Star Wars. Additionally, these prequels ask questions the core audience may never have been after, namely those surrounding the origins of man and beast.

That, plus this opening on less than similar cheep fanfic cash-ins such as Alien vs Predator. Maybe they should really just give the fans exactly what they want — careful what they may be asking for. It was and is cheesy, derivative hokum that was pretty much just right place, right time with some good characters.

Alien was one of the greatest sci fi movies ever made and one of the greatest horrors, thrillers or action movies. It was a lot of things, including much better than any of the Star Wars movies to date — or all of them combined, frankly.

Just like Gimme Shelter by itself is better than all Beatles songs combined. And the second lived up to the first. The third was an abomination and the fourth…well, it was different and opinions vary, but pretty good to good. Alien vs Predator movies are not. Might as well just make one called Bishop where the Alien makes a cameo. Which is pretty much what this latest is. But as bad as it is, it is not nearly as bad as Star Wars are.

It sucks, but those are a complete joke…like Lucas was trying to make terrible movies and ruin his legacy. Not only is there nothing good about it, it is profoundly awful. The cast reeks, they took the most annoying, insufferable character from the incoherent garbage fire that was Prometheus and added a second one…a duplicate. And they talk and play a flute.

In an Alien movie. Right after a bad series of uninteresting events. At least a banjo would have been funny. And you just knew the flute was going to be rammed into one of their necks, it was pretty much subtitled it was so predictable.

I wanted to walk out. The alien we all know and love showed up at the very end and guess how they got rid of it?

I loved the flute scene…. I found the movie one of the most bat crap crazy sci fi movies I have ever scene. And I will agree it is a Prometheus sequel, but that is not at all a horrible thing. Gorgeous and engrossing from head to toe, yes characters made dumb choices, but from every alien movie I have seen, they all make dumb choices, and we would not have movies without their dumb choices.

Well, Gimme Shelter is better and a lot more listenable than a lot of Beatles songs, which really feels outdated now, and sounds like a 60s songs, which are also very cheesy, You can say White Album and Sgt. Pepper are better than any Stones records but those records have some real cheesy songs. Take Exile, it is more hard rocking and fun, damn good too. Pepper any time of the day. Dumbest crew in cinematic history.

I loathe to be dragged back to another round of Colonial Marines shouting dumb catchphrases, as they fight the killer ants from space. You just have to look at the Martian to realise that Ridley can still tell a wonderful story, he just needs to be backed up by a good script. The scene with the Neomorph crouched over his victim was so grotesquely beautiful, and would have to be one of the most visually stunning shots in the whole Alien franchise.

You read the script that never existed? As someone else has stated. Ripley is dead, let her rest. By the way, it would have been super cool to have Daniels discover David was not Walter and end his ass. That would have been true to the Alien franchise of having a woman be the kick ass.

She was the smart and strong one all throughout the movie and then you have her defeated at the end. You could have had another Ripley.

Get back on the horse and do better, Mr.

Nah, I see David as the anti-Ripley. Let it be that the planet Covenant left was not the Engineer home world, but simply a colony. Obviously, the Engineers are a multi-planet species.

Have them capture and harness the Aliens and other freak creatures left on the colony planet and study what was done. Have them track down David. And, obviously, humans are becoming a multi-planet species as Covenant must not be the only colony ship to leave Earth on similar timing. Create a whole new storyline. Hell, man, live a little! Expand the mythology if you want it to be bigger.

Stop making these dumb movies about aliens. Star Wars films are dumb. Alien Covenant is smart. But you have to be smart to see that. An opportunity was missed in Covenant by not expanding on the Engineers.

Who were the they? Why did they create us? Did they create others? Did rogue Engineers create us? Why did they call to us to visit? Why did a faction of them want to end humans on Earth?

There was so much interest in the Engineers. They were new and interesting and made sense in the context of the story direction. Making David the creator of the Alien leads to nowhere. They second half of Covenant proves that there is nowhere interesting to go. The end was boring.

Alien 3 - Wikipedia

Aliens killing humans on the colonized planet, as a David experiment. The released version was simply too short, too many scenes and characters missing. DeMille and it stars Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner and Anne Baxter. The Aliens franchise is not making money because the movies are bad. Not because Star Wars is or was good. There is absolutely no input from sequel master James Cameron who gave us:. People try to be all nostalgic about the original Alien, but what cemented its legacy was Aliens.

Prometheus was Ughh……with David just randomly infecting people with black goo for no reason that was explained in the move. Aliens is a great popcorn movie, in line with Indiana Jones and the Marvel movies.

But not really a masterpiece. Aliens combined the dramatic tension from Alien with action and likable characters, it was a much better movie.

Agreed…I loved Prometheus with its larger than life themes about creation and the universe. Covenant poops on those themes and the entire franchise with its David reveal. Variety and the Flying V logos are trademarks of Variety Media, LLC.
