THE will to live started to leak from Barbara Williams' soul during a hastily convened court hearing more than 20 months ago. It was February 28 last year and her son Carl had told his lawyers he was prepared to do a deal to plead guilty to three murders in exchange for a set minimum sentence. Already convicted of the October murder of Michael Marshall, he was facing court hearings that would last five years if he continued to fight the other charges.

He knew that if he was found guilty of further murders he would be sentenced to life with no minimum. But while his lawyers were keen to do a deal, his mother was intractable. The thought of Carl spending decades in jail was too much for her to contemplate and she believed her son should fight all the charges. For her, the regular trips to his court hearings had replaced more traditional family meetings. At least this way she could see her son away from bleak and brief prison visits.

But as Williams was being driven back to Barwon prison from court after the last day of pre-trial discussions the word filtered to the Office of Public Prosecutions that he was ready to plead.
